Rarely does a movie come out of seemingly nowhere and really punch me in the gut like this film did.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t know about THE BATTERY until all of the Best of 2013 lists came out and a friend of mine damn ear forced me by gun point to watch the film. I’m really glad he never pulled the trigger.
This film does something that zombies films or television programs haven’t been able to do in a long time, and that’s have character development and really make you feel the plight of the characters as they traverse the countryside, stopping only to forage or sleep. Even the brushing of their teeth is made a bigger deal by the grand scheme of it all.
Another thing that this film did that I REALLY enjoy is not try and find “an answer for infection”. They don’t try to push some crappy excuse for WHY there are zombies, or how to stop them, they really take a stance and only focus on the characters.
They explain in the film why being held up in one place isn’t a great idea and constantly being on the road is the only way to survive in a situation like this. There’s no prison, no mall, place to finally call home. Just others trying to survive who are willing to do anything to do so.
Another thing that really stuck out is the budget. Shot on DSLRs and costing around $5k, this film had the feel of something on a much larger scale.
Not only am I going to say that this was the best horror film of 2013, it quite possibly is one of the best films of 2013 PERIOD.
Not only written, and directed by Jeremy Gardner, he also was the star of this show, along with his trusty sidekick, his beard.
This is one film that you do NOT want to miss out on!
